Who should attend?

Render is for those who are contemplating the potential of entering into full-time ministry, seeking to affirm God's calling for full-time ministry, or are already attending seminary. Our hope is that through the mentoring, small groups, workshops, and main sessions, Render will provide greater clarity into God's call for a life in full-time ministry and the potential next steps needed for those who are called.

Our speaker

Joey Chen is lead pastor at Sunset Church in San Francisco, California. He has a passion for what God is doing in cities, since they are a strategic place for gospel ministry. Chen earned his MDiv from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and is currently pursuing a DMin at Talbot School of Theology. He is blessed to be married to Jeannette, and they have two beautiful girls, along with a silly labradoodle named Cashew.

Your Calling to Youth Ministry The common perception is that youth workers age out of their ministry and become pastors. This workshop will discuss your personal calling to youth ministry and the need for life-long youth ministers.

While the theological battles still go on concerning women in leadership, this workshop will focus on the practical aspects of men and women serving together with a look towards future developments in the Asian American church.

Working under a Chinese speaking Senior Pastor/with Chinese Leadership
Ministering to the English speaking in a Chinese church can be wrought with challenges. This workshop will not solve all the issues related with those challenges, but will give some tips, share some lessons learned, and encourage you to continue on your journey ahead.

Not all seminaries are the same. This workshop will not tell you the prestigious seminaries to attend, but will guide you to find the seminary that meets your theological, financial and community needs.

How does Family and Marriage work in Ministry?
Maybe the biggest challenge you face won’t be the Chinese Senior Pastor but juggling your own marriage and family life with your ministry. How do you love your family and love the church when they are competing for your time and attention? How do you draw healthy boundaries? This workshop will address perhaps the greatest factor to longevity in ministry, maintaining a healthy strong family life while in ministry.

Our Mission

Render West Coast is inspired by the original Render retreats created by the Partnership of Asian American Churches in Texas. We hold the same mission: To support and encourage English-speaking Asian-Americans in the pursuit of vocational ministry and cast a vision for ministry in the local church.

CHCC Supported

Render is affiliated with Chinese Heritage Church Collaborative (CHCC), which is a collaboration among ministers from Chinese heritage churches. They seek to encourage and offer ways for ministers in Chinese heritage churches to connect.

In the Name

The name Render is taken from Psalm 116:12, “What shall I render to the Lord for all His benefits toward me?” To Render means to give or make available; to give what is due or owed; to give in return or retribution; to surrender or relinquish.
